In the realm of architectural innovation and urban transformation, building wraps stand as towering symbols of creativity and possibility. That’s why this month we’re celebrating the incredible possibilities that building wraps represent. At MetWest we first discovered wraps through solar control film, an incredibly powerful tool for sustainable design. However, in recent years we’ve worked with clients to push the boundaries of building wraps and what it can do in terms of transformational design.
In this blog article, we’re going on a journey through some of our most iconic building wrap projects, each a testament to our dedication to shaping the future of urban spaces.
Highlighting the importance of sustainability and energy efficiency in modern building design, this wrap shows the transformative impact of Solar Gard Silver 20 Outside Wearable (OSW) Window Film. Facing the challenge of deteriorating glass in two 1980s-era medical office buildings, the owner sought a cost-effective and sustainable solution. Opting for Solar Gard Silver 20 OSW Window Film proved to be a game-changer. By enhancing solar protection, reducing heat and glare, and boosting energy efficiency, the film revitalized the buildings’ appearance while minimizing disruption to tenants.
The project’s success was not only evident in the buildings’ dramatic aesthetic transformation but also in the tangible energy savings experienced by tenants. Moreover, MetWest’s seamless project execution ensured minimal disruption, fostering positive communication and coordination. The environmentally conscious approach resulted in over 2000 pieces of glass and mullions being diverted from landfills, underlining the project’s commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the owner received utility company rebates, further enhancing the solution’s cost-effectiveness and environmental impact.
MetWest took on the monumental task of rejuvenating the historic Occidental Petroleum Building nestled in the bustling heart of Los Angeles. And a building wrap was the perfect strategy to accomplish this. Designed by renowned architect Claud Beelman, this architectural gem stands as a testament to Corporate International commercial design in Westwood. Erected in 1962, the building’s grandeur had dulled over time, with its original glass façade showcasing a patchwork of mismatched appearances, from obscured views behind blinds or curtains to exposed open spaces.
MetWest’s solution involved applying large-scale film to the windows, seamlessly unifying the building’s façade and restoring its timeless elegance. Not only did this transformation enhance the building’s aesthetic appeal, but it also yielded substantial energy savings, a critical consideration for an office space situated in the sweltering summers of LA, where HVAC costs can soar.
By effectively reducing heat gain and maintaining cooler interiors, the solar film not only slashes cooling expenses but also safeguards interior furnishings from the detrimental effects of sun-induced fading. The outcome is a strikingly revitalized structure that pays homage to Beelman’s original vision and serving as a shining example of historic modern architecture in Los Angeles. The Occidental Petroleum Building stands tall as a testament to MetWest’s expertise in preserving and updating historic landmarks, seamlessly blending the past with the present to create a harmonious fusion of architectural excellence and sustainability.
In the realm of branding and marketing, the Avocado Mattress project serves as a beacon of innovation and visual storytelling. With its installation in spring 2023, the MetWest used custom printed exterior-rated Scotchall with matte UV lamination to transform the façade of Avocado Mattress’s location at Washington Square Mall in Portland, Oregon. Previously adorned with a broad expanse of plain glass, this upper-level space lacked the opportunity for traditional product displays but presented an ideal canvas for graphics to engage both pedestrian and car traffic. Created by the Avocado Mattress team, the colorful imagery cheerfully reflecting the brand.
The result? A visual spectacle that not only distinguishes Avocado Mattress from its neighboring stores but also serves to catch the eye and draw customers into its retail space. Through the innovative use of building wraps, Avocado Mattress has successfully harnessed the potential of its physical environment to craft an immersive brand experience. This project stands as a testament to the transformative power of building wraps in elevating brand visibility and creating memorable customer interactions, solidifying Avocado Mattress’s position as a trailblazer in the realm of retail marketing.
In conclusion, the three exemplary projects showcased—Fountain Valley Regional Hospital & Medical Center, the Occidental Petroleum Building, and Avocado Mattress—underscore the transformative potential of building wraps in shaping the future of architecture, sustainability, and branding.
As leaders in the field of building wrap solutions, we at MetWest remain steadfast in our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and creativity. With each project, we strive to unveil the boundless potential of the future, one wrap at a time. Join us in shaping a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow, where every building tells a story of innovation, sustainability, and creative vision—wrapped in the promise of endless possibilities.
